The city walk takes place at a leisurely pace through the city center and provides both historical insight and good recommendations for further stays in the city.
A walk through the city's history
Ålesund has a dramatic and fascinating history. Along the way you will hear about:
- The first settlers settled here because of the rich fish reserves
- The great city fire of 1904 that left the city center in ruins
- The Art Nouveau revival – in a new and independent Norway
The guide conveys both the broad outlines and the small details that make the story come alive.
The Art Nouveau city of Ålesund
Ålesund is internationally known for its characteristic Art Nouveau architecture. During the city walk you will see several of the city's most distinctive buildings, as well as details in facades, ornamentation and design from the period after 1904.
You will learn what characterizes the Art Nouveau style – and why Ålesund is today considered one of Europe's most comprehensive Art Nouveau cities.
The modern city
The city walk is not just about the past. You also get an insight into Ålesund as the city is today – a modern coastal city with strong business, maritime expertise, cultural offerings and educational institutions.
The tour ends at the Jugendstil Center, a natural starting point for further exploration of the city, visiting museums, shopping or a meal at one of the nearby restaurants.
The city walks are a collaboration with Ålesund Tourist Information and have been held for more than 20 years. From the 2026 season, city walks can also be booked via GetYourGuide.
